Composer’s Note:
When the Violin is about that first moment of trust, of softening. Originally conceived in a version for choir and cello obbligato, this work was a setting of the eponymous text attributed to the 14th-century Sufi poet and mystic, Hafiz. The work is set in the Hindustani raag Charukeshi, which to Western ears, pulls between major and minor modalities -- between an outward searching and an inner knowing. It is about that moment of feeling our own heart begin to crack open, to reveal the beauty of the song inside ourselves.
